Toulouse Initiative for Research Impact on Society – TIRIS

The TIRIS project, winner of the PIA4 ‘ExcellencES’ programme, is mobilising Toulouse’s scientific excellence to support change and help build the world of tomorrow.

TIRIS: interdisciplinarity at the service of transitions

The TIRIS (Toulouse Initiative for Research’s Impact on Society) programme, a winner of the ExcellencES programme, brings together the higher education and research community in Toulouse and the surrounding region around a common objective: to mobilise scientific excellence, by promoting interdisciplinarity, to support major transitions and build the world of tomorrow.

Supported by the Toulouse Community of Universities and Colleges, TIRIS plays a key role in the development of an internationally renowned research university. It is based on three main thematic pillars: health and well-being, the impact of global change on societies, and sustainable transitions.

To meet today’s challenges, TIRIS is deploying four action programmes: research, education, innovation, and science and society, encouraging collaboration between the major fields of science and new ways of working together. A number of calls for projects and schemes have been set up to support these initiatives.

3 thematic pillars

Drawing on the site’s strengths, the TIRIS project has identified 3 priority themes, the site’s scientific signature and the pillars of the scientific community’s action and commitment with and for society.

Health and well-being

Living well means living in good health at all ages, benefiting from a healthy diet, a favourable environment and socio-economic conditions, and an efficient healthcare system.

Impact of global change on societies

Mobilise to address the consequences of human activities on climate change, ecosystems, the environment and society, which are at the heart of the global scientific debate.

Sustainable transitions

The major challenges facing society require profound and rapid transformations in consumption and production, and the adaptation of mobility at every level.

4 action programmes

TIRIS is an interdisciplinary programme dedicated to transitions. Spearheaded by the Toulouse Community of Universities and Colleges, it brings together experts from a wide range of fields to support transitions, help build a sustainable and inclusive future and respond to the major challenges of tomorrow.

Through four targeted action programmes: research, education, innovation, science & society, TIRIS highlights Toulouse’s scientific excellence in all its forms.

Research

Stimulate new interdisciplinary research and attract new talent to address the major challenges of the 21st century.

Formation

Fostering the emergence, incubation and consolidation of partnership-based innovation projects with a societal impact and demonstrators to accelerate change.

Innovation

Developing new interdisciplinary courses to meet the major challenges facing society, technology and science.

Science and society

Develop a shared culture and solutions co-constructed with non-academics to meet socio-eco-environmental challenges.
